The History of Miss Gay North Carolina America (MGNCA)

The first Miss Gay North Carolina America was produced by Pageant Enterprises in Greenville, NC. The first pageant was held in 1979 and eighteen contestants competed for the title of Miss North Carolina for Female Impersonators, which was awarded to Brandy Alexander on July 21. The pageant was moved to the Power Company in Durham for the second year’s competition and remained there for the next fourteen years. Best Preliminary in the Country was first won during the pageant’s fifth year (and at MGA 1989).

In 1994, Von Entertainment continued the tradition by crowning Tracy Morgan Miss Gay North Carolina America and produced the pageant for a number of years, for which Von Entertainment was awarded Best Preliminary in 1997.

In 2005, the pageant moved to Greenville, NC and was produced there for the next 3 years. During this time, the pageant proudly crowned three very talented performers, Scarlett Daily, Miss Demeaner and Coti Collins.

The Miss Gay North Carolina America Pageant came back with Von Entertainment and the Scorpio in 2008. In it’s first year back, the pageant won the Miss Gay America 2008 Best State Pageant Set Design Award (thanks Greg Fulk!) as well as Best Opening Production Number for a State Pageant.

In 2009, the pageant again won Best Opening Production Number for a State Pageant. They were also very proud to receive the Norma Kristie Lifetime Achievement Award for 2009. This was the first time a state pageant had received this distinguished award.

In 2010, MGA awarded the pageant the following: Largest State Preliminary, Best State Preliminary, Best Set/Stage Design and Best Airport Greeting!

A special thank you goes out to Tiffany Storm and Brett York for their tireless efforts in bringing the Miss Gay NC America pageant back home!
